Best paint apps for iPad, iPhone and Galaxy Note. Tips, Twitterings and Tutorials.

When Apple’s iTunes App Store opened last July, there were only some nineteen drawing and painting apps for the iPhone or Ipod. Now there are dozens of applications, all jumping up and down to tempt you with marvellous art tools and scot-free upgrades for life.

Early bird. But did it get all the worms?

Early iPhone Chicken

Early iPhone Chicken

Igraffiti was among the earliest iphone drawing apps and one of the first to undergo the Purple Owl chicken drawing test.

Igraffiti should be good. It’s made by Stone Design, long time creators of Mac art software.

The outstanding feature of this app is its range of brushes. A whole page of sliders to select just the shape and transparency you want. The tapered brush gives a particularly fine and realistic effect.

Igraffiti has its disadvantages. Suppose I make two strokes and don’t like them. To get to the Undo screen, I have to shake my iphone so hard that I’m in danger of hurling it out of the window.

I then have only the choice of undoing one last stroke – or the whole drawing. (Tip. Save frequently in this app to avoid disaster.)

Colours are limited. As to zooming in to draw details, by the time I’ve jumped through all the hoops required, I’ve forgotten what I came for!

Shouldn't Be Here Bird

Shouldn't Be Here Bird

Hey, what’s this bird doing here? To start with he isn’t a chicken. Furthermore, he was drawn in Sketches and only finished off in iGraffiti. These twitterers get everywhere!

Where was !? Oh yes, to sum up. iGraffiti is certainly an app to try for its beautiful brushes. Its other tools could be easier to use.

  1. How can I submit iPhone Art to your site?

    • Owl says:

Sorry I don’t at present have a facility for people to submit work to my site or blog. I am at present learning a bit more about the technicalities of offering such things. I will certainly let you know if I start up a shared gallery.

  2. I’m making iPhone Art every day, using apps to make art the day they’re released on the app store, and posting the results to my flickr photostream. It’s all happening pretty fast…new tools for a new computing platform.

So glad you found my blog. Before I got your messages, I had already bookmarked your site. You do some really impressive work, very inspiring!

These phones are amazing…and to think I can barely figure out how to turn mine on. Not to mention needing a magnifying glass to see anything. I love your little should be here bird! ;)
