Talking of drawing and painting on an iPhone or Ipod Touch…
Come to think of it, I wasn’t. Never mind. Not so long ago I promised to reveal the results of the great Iphone and Ipod Chicken Drawing Project.
Brought to you by Purple Owl Research (no less) this endeavour attempts to discover which painting and drawing application from the Apple App Store cuts the most mustard.
I fear our first exhibit, drawn in our first app, Sketches, will not be cutting mustard any time soon.

Iphone Chicken Subject One
Don’t be too hard on this regrettable bird. I have to agree that he is short on fluff. He bears the scars of repeated doomed attempts at preening. However, one has to be honest about shortcomings, and the iphone app Sketches does have fewer than most.
Sketches does not pretend to be a fine art app. It even offers cartoon speech bubbles and funny hats, enlisting itself firmly in the ‘Give the Mona Lisa a Moustache’ brigade. However, I can vouch that Sketches offers a bit more than fun for five year olds, and is handy for a quick doodle or a shopping list.

Shopping List Jotted in 'Sketches'
Sketches is fast and easy to use, opening up with tool tips invitingly jotted down as notelets on a corkboard. Select a note and you can start erasing and scribbling on it straight away.
Detail is tricky in this app. As with most iphone drawing and painting applications, your finger hides the point of your pen or brush. There’s no option to offset it. Zooming is limited to one level so magnifying doesn’t make it much easier to see what you are doing.
While we’re niggling, Sketches only offers 24 colours. Three levels of transparency have been added in free upgrades since I first bought it, but there’s no choice of brushes. Wide or narrow you can choose, but it’s a hard line or nothing.
Hence the fluff problem. I ask you, what is a chicken without his fluff? Scribbles have to do…

Iphone Chicken Drawing Two
Photo backgrounds are a big plus for Sketches, however, and bring your chickens right up to your feet. Backgrounds appear on a layer beneath your drawing, so you can change them at will.

Iphone Chicken Drawing Three
Don’t miss the next episode of the great Iphone Chicken Drawing investigation. Hatching in a day or two.

Anita
On behalf of my chicken, thank you!!
I love the chicken! His feathers are a little unconventional, it’s true, but he has lots of personality. I am very interested in these posts. In fact, I investigated a few programs after I first read your post about iphone drawing aps a few months ago. I test mine with a five year old, too. Karol
Ah, I’m glad you approve of this rather hangdog chicken! I’m also chuffed that you are so interested in iphone/ipod drawing. Hope to tell you more soon. I have been making a comparison chart of the tools in several apps. (I’ve been told I always research things a bit too thoroughly, but that’s me!) Of course I’m used to Corel Painter (and Photoshop) which have rather more bells and whistles!!
