Best paint apps for iPad, iPhone and Galaxy Note. Tips, Twitterings and Tutorials.

The Women, originally uploaded by purple0wl.

This image was created from an iphone photo of statues in the grounds of Arundel Castle, southern England.

Channels, blending modes and filters were played one against the other in Corel Painter to give an eerie glow.

How about making selections and masks in painting apps for the iphone. Are they possible? I have tried about thirty painting, drawing and photo apps on my iphone, and at first I scratched my head and said no. Then I realised the answer was yes.

You can draw masks in Vihgo, applying various textures and lighting effects to the unprotected areas.

Layers in Brushes, Layers and Sketchbook Mobile give plenty of scope for masking effects. You could paint a ship on a transparent layer, and erase around it to reveal a photo of the sea below. That’s much like using a mask.

I’m sure there are other ways of selecting and using masks in iphone drawing and painting apps. Can you think of any? Do comment and let me know!

Hi Barb. Interested in your comment. Painter is not in fact available for the iPad, let alone the iPhone or iTouch. This image was made on my MacBook and drawn with a Wacom Intuos 4 – though the original photo was taken with my iPhone.

I am fascinated by how many Painter and Photoshop tools I can replicate with the iPad/iPhone apps. Surprisingly many.

Re reading on electronic devices – I haven’t read a book on paper for years, and I do read a fair bit. As you can paint as well as read on the iPad, I suppose it must be the iPad for you. However, (I’ve only had my iPad a few days so may be wrong) – so far I’m finding it difficult to load books onto my iPad. I much prefer reading on my iPhone. Choice of type face, colours, layout etc for maximum readability – and text is in a column, which as newspapers and magazines know is the fastest and easiest way to read. Before the iPhone, I read on an assortment of phones, and just love this way of reading. I still don’t understand why people would want a Kindle or such.

  2. Hi Valerie. iPhone folk should really hire you, you know. You are great Public Relations for them. I love the texture you’ve managed on this one using channels and masks in Painter.

Have you started using painting apps on your new iPad yet? Reading John Derry’s editorial in the June issue of Digital Paint Magazine gave me lots to consider… Do I want a webbook (Sony’s) or an iPad? The iPad is looking better all the time.
