In today's post, we are going to depart from the norm a bit, in that we want to take the opportunity to outline some background information and history about the world of hydraulics. Continue reading if you are interested in learning about some broad-level information in the world of hydraulics, including a description of the origin of hydraulics, and historical and modern uses of hydraulics. Let's begin! Hydraulics Origins Hydraulics can best be defined as a part of fluid mechanics, which involves the physics, movement, and use of gases and liquids. More specifically, Merriam-Webster's Dictionary defines hydraulics as a "branch of science that deals with practical applications of liquid in motion." And although ancient scientists such as Aristotle dabbled within the realm of hydraulics, push levers, and turn wheels, it was a seventeenth century French scientist named Pascal who unearthed many of our main principles of hydraulics that we still use to this day. Pascal studied physics, which included atmospheric pressure, conic sections, and hydrostatics. Pascal discovered that pressure on a confined fluid exhibited a significant phenomenon in that the pressure applies an equally distributed force in all directions. Not only that, but these forces could be utilized for the benefit of society. It wasn't until the eighteenth century, however, that this idea would be actualized by Daniel Bernoulli, when he pressurized water into pumps or mills, in what is now deemed the "Bernoulli Principal." Hydraulics Uses Hydraulics can be used in a variety of ways, and most of them pass us by without many of us realizing that a hydraulic cylinder or valve is in use. Perhaps one of the most common uses of hydraulics is in the realm of car brakes. Essentially car brakes function via a piston being pressed when a driver pushes the brake pedal down. The piston forces a requisite amount of pressure onto the brake fluid, which in turn will press down on a larger piston. Finally the larger piston comes into contact with a larger brake drum, which accomplishes the end goal of stopping the automobile. In another way, hydraulics are also used within heavy equipment, which is where Acadiana Hydraulics comes into play. This might be obvious to many of our readers, but there is very little scope to the range of uses that hydraulics can include. From dump trucks to bulldozers, hydraulics are nearly limitless in their variety and power. When one takes a step back, it's remarkable to comprehend the magnitude of hydraulic uses.
