Alamo Hardwoods Blog But Is It Art?

But Is It Art?Over the years, no, decades that Alamo Hardwoods has been doing business we have worked with an amazingly wide variety of individuals and companies. Many artists (like William Carrington) will come into the showroom with a work and we'll start laying out various pieces to consider for bases. A recent new client, Lynn Dusenbury, found us and we had a blast trying to find something that would complement her metal sculpture without overshadowing her work. Then we saw just how different a work could look in various lighting and agreed that a great photographer (like out friend Swain Edens) is worth their weight in silver (used in print making). We help out our friends in the framing world and the local museums on a regular basis and always have to balance making a piece look great and stealing the spotlight. We also work closely with just about all of the local architecture firms and the lines between structure and craft and art become blurred at best. What elevates a piece from simple function to the realm of "art". How does that moment of magic occur?Matt Hlavinka works a day job at Lake Flato architects, but in his spare time creates furniture that rises above function to the point of it being a shame to ask his amazing cabinet to hold something as mundane as a plate or a book. His chair made of salvaged longleaf pine wall studs looks like more than a simple place to sit ( if there was a set of six, would that change that? Would he be offended if you put a needlepoint pillow on it?) As Rodney Dangerfield asked in the film "Back to School " when his wife asked him not to throw his clothes on the Breuer chair, "How come all our furniture has names?" Does that make it art? I don't think this question will be solved here in this format, so I'll let the work of these talented people speak for itself....(One thing I think can be safely said, if you can hang it sideways and no one notices, it qualifies as "modern" art!!)ArtPace gallery Mesquite Frame Metal work by Lynn Dusenbury, Mesquite BaseMetal sculpture with flash, good lighting design worth every pennyRobert from Art Inc hanging a walnut framed piece at Pioneer FlourCabinet by Matt HlavinkaMatt Hlavinka Reclaimed Longleaf Pine Art ChairEuropean Pear (But is it ART?) )Posted by JR on 2nd August, 2013 | Comments (45) | Trackbacks | PermalinkCategories: art community, art, artistTags: art artist community
