Despite all our advances in medical equipment and technologies, healthcare remains a workforce intensive industry. Because the workforce is critical to a hospital's efficiency, to the quality of care, and ultimately to performance and survival in the sector. Ensuring there are the right staff available, with the right skills at the right time, all within the right budget is a real balancing act. It's a challenge that's defeating healthcare systems all around the world. Take the UK's NHS as an example: At the end of 2016, only 22% of hospital executives were confident they would have the correct staffing levels in six months' time, while staff shortages frequently put patients at risk. Here in the Emirates, where the market is relatively young and around 60% privatised according to Colliers International, the overall story is pretty much the same. The region suffers from a chronic shortage of physicians and nurses, especially those with high-level expertise. It is reported that in the UAE there are 1.5 physicians per 1,000 people, far behind Germany with 3.7. In Kuwait there are 2.7 nurses per 1,000 people, compared with 13 in the Netherlands.
