OAK RIDGE , Tenn., USA : Atkins Nuclear Secured Holding Corporation (ANS), a member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael "Mike" Hughes to its Board of Directors, as an Outside Director. Mr. Hughes, who has 35 years of experience leading nuclear operations, will provide oversight for corporate activities and security compliance to ensure alignment with the Company's vision and strategy. "Mr. Hughes' has a reputation for operational excellence within the nuclear industry," said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, SNC-Lavalin. "His career long commitment to safeguards and security, high-level accountability and strong governance bolsters ANS' mission to clean and protect the planet's land, air and water, while enabling prosperity and improving community's standard of living." Prior to joining the ANS Board, Mr. Hughes supported the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in developing the One System approach, creating consistent operational requirements across all contracts enabling performance tracking. The DOE deemed the approach a strategic-level best practice. "Mr. Hughes brings a wealth of expertise and experience leading nuclear operations, and I have no doubt his insights and guidance will be invaluable as we continue to grow and evolve our business," said Jim Rugg, President, Atkins Nuclear Secured. Mr. Hughes has created and implemented remediation strategies throughout his career that have become standard operating procedures withing the industry. He oversaw the transition of the Hanford Site in Washington state from operations to closure. He led the safe storage of the first five reactors, construction of the 4-cell environmental waste disposal facility, decommissioning of the 233-S plutonium facility and soil and groundwater improvements. Mr. Hughes also managed high-risk projects at Idaho Falls, Idaho; Los Alamos, New Mexico; Oak Ridge, Tennessee; Paducah, Kentucky; Portsmouth, Ohio and Savanah River, Georgia as well as the Sellafield Site in the United Kingdom. He earned his Master's in Community and Regional Planning and his Social Sciences degree from the University of North Dakota and is a retired Major in the U.S. Army.
