Aliso Viejo-based Adroid Worldwide Media, which goes by the name AWM Smart Shelf, has raised $11M in its Series A funding round, for its retail shopping application and cashierless checkout system. According to AWM Smart Shelf, the funding round was led by Impact Venture Capital, and also included Mark IV Capital and The Contrarian Group. Adroit Worldwide Media says it is using artificial intelligence, computer vision, and machine learning for its retail shopping tools, which lets retail shoppers walk into a store, remove products from a shelf, and automatically are charged on their digital wallet for items they take out of the store. The company claims that its systems allow users to pick up items from a store without any need to scan purchases or to go through a checkout line, using computer vision and "deep learning" algorithms. The company said the new funding will go towards accelerating growth of its technology, among other efforts. Adroit Media Worldwide is lead by CEO Kevin Howard. As part of the funding, Impact Venture Capital's General Partner, Jack Crawford, has joined the company's board of directors.
