Cats are quickly becoming the most popular pet here in the United States. Most cat owners admit that they decided on their feline companions because a puppy or a dog is more work and often doesn't fit into today's busy lifestyle. When it comes time to take a vacation or weekend trip, most cat owners think it is "fine" to leave Fluffy with a large bowl of water and some extra dry food for several days. This could be a huge mistake! There are a number of reasons as to why you shouldn't do this. 1.) As independent as cats are, they can still get lonely and develop anxiety when their family leaves for several days. The more anxious they become, the more likely they are to develop some behavioral issues that may linger long after their pet parents return home. This could also happen if they get bored and don't have enough stimulation. This is especially true of younger cats and newer additions to the family. 2.) Litter boxes. Once they become full, they can get very smelly. When this happens, Fluffy may feel better relieving herself in other places. This can become a habit that is hard to break. It is always best to be proactive and try to prevent this behavior rather than try to correct it after it starts. 3.) Household hazards. When cats are bored and is in play mode, they can (and often will) find some of the strangest things to play with. Things like electrical cords, drape/blind pulls, twist ties, wrappers, trash, etc. Some of the obvious potential problems with these items include electrocution from chewing on electrical cords, swallowing small flexible objects that can lead to choking or GI obstruction not to mention getting into possible toxic foods and items that may be in the trash, etc. Another important thing to consider is that if a cat got stuck somewhere or injured, it could be days before she is found and helped. This could be a potentially dangerous and/or fatal situation for Fluffy. 4.) Most cats enjoy their usual routine and don't like change. For those that are used to being fed a couple of times a day, they may gorge on dry kibble that is left out for them rather than leaving some for later. Those that are left wet/canned food may not touch it after it has dried out or gone stale. Cats also enjoy fresh water and will often pass up stale or stagnant water. Cats need plenty of fresh water at all times. Cats that go without food and/or water for 24 hours or more can develop some serious medical conditions that may be irreversible. This may include kidney and/or liver problems as well as urinary tract infections and/or blockages. All of which could be potentially life threatening if not detected early. A professional pet sitter is familiar with these potential problems and will always recommend at least one daily visit for cats. With the proper care and attention to detail, your pet sitter may be able to prevent and/or detect potential problems and get the treatment necessary before it becomes a serious and/or a life-threating situation. Some of the more experienced professional pet sitters may decline a job if they feel that it is not safe for the cat. Others may have pet owners sign a waiver if they do not want daily visits as recommended. It all comes down to work ethics and morals. A true professional pet sitter always has the best interest of the pet in mind. Yet another reason to hire a true PROFESSIONAL pet sitter!
