With the latest VOLUNTARY PET FOOD RECALLS making headlines almost daily, it seems to be spreading panic among pet owners! All of the reports I've gotten from my distributor and the pet food companies directly have said that so far NONE of the recalled foods have tested positive for salmonella! Apparently this particular episode has "hit" more HUMANS than it has pets! The latest news I've heard is that 14 people have gotten sick from salmonella and so far NO PETS have been reported ill! That tells me that either the people do not have good hygiene or it's NOT from the PET FOOD at all! 1.) Salmonella is usually NOT a threat to healthy pets! (Pets with weakened or compromised immune systems are more suceptible.) 2.) People should handle pet foods with the same care and precautions that they use to handle their own food! (i.e., WASH YOUR HANDS, wash all utensils and dishes thoroughly, etc.) 3.) If you feed your pet DRY PET FOOD, then you should rotate/alternate brands regularly. Not only is this better for your pet, but it provides more of a variety of nutrients and makes your pet less likely to develop allergies! It's important to note that almost ALL of the recalls have involved DRY FOODS ONLY! This is most likely due to the fact that it is the most highly processed, least nutritious and most "handled" of all the pet foods. Almost every pet food company has been affected by a recall at some point. Some legitimate and some just precautionary. Pet owners need to know that while dry food may be convenient and the most economical, it still needs to be handled, prepared and stored with care!
