Boutique-Homes Blog Heinz Julen Loft, Zermatt, Switzerland

Selected by the London Times as one of the "20 Coolest Chalets in the Alps" for two years in a row, this commanding and glamorous loft designed by architect and local luminary Heinz Julen combines the rustic aesthetics of the Alps with sleek urban sensibilities. A multidisciplinary artist whose projects are deeply identified with his origins and family history in the region, Zermatt is home to an extensive portfolio of his commercial and residential creations. Formerly Julen's private residence, the home has been host to legendary parties and is an integral part of the local lore.Composed of epic proportions that still manage to be warm and inviting, the interiors take a familiar context and theme and give them a glamorous urban spin with a strong sense of place. Supported by seven soaring columns, the architectural attributes are bold and expressive and celebrate the scenery with transparent floor to ceiling walls of glass. Using some reclaimed and salvaged materials in a fusion of steel, textured concrete and wood, the effect is sleek and rugged with modern industrial overtones. The open loft configuration features well defined living spaces with comfy sitting areas to sink into around the fireplace and baby grand Steinway. The custom furnishings and art are from Julen's own furniture shop including jack-in-the-box armchairs, an illuminated table which can be raised and lowered for entertaining, a wall of art, and a signature chandelier. Both levels of the house are serviced by an elevator or metal staircase that leads to the mezzanine level lounge with a galley kitchen, dining area and cantilevered bar. There are two en-suite bedrooms overlooking the lower living areas, one above the other with a private master suite featuring an island bed on a rotating floor. An exciting and exceptionally crafted holiday home, this chic chalet's commanding artistry and luxurious indulgences are a decadent, high altitude treat.
