Children's Home Healthcare Blog Remembering9/11

Talking to kids about big things such as tragedy can be daunting. For some young children, even the concept of death or "bad guys" can be tricky. But on a day of national importance such as September 11, it is important to remember the fallen and the heroes of our nation who gave their lives to protect others. Ask what your child knows about 9/11Even if your child wasn't born on the day of the attacks, they might have heard about the day from a teacher, a movie, or a book. Let your child steer the conversation about what they know so they feel comfortable about the topic. You might be surprised to see what your child has picked up from the news or adult conversations.Use a bookSince the attacks, there have been many children's books published to help explain the day to young ones. Try reading a book such as America is Under Attack, By Don Brown (for children in 1st grade through 5th grade) and seeing what kind of questions your child has after you have read it together. Talk about heroes Explain to your child that there might be "bad guys" in the world, but there are infinitely more "good guys". Tell your child about the first responders, search-and-rescue teams, volunteers, and the Red Cross. You can even tell them about the 300 rescue dogs that works on the scene! While the subject of tragedy and 9/11 is a tough subject, it is one that will bring you and your child closer together and help them to remember the heroes of America.
