Dialog Semiconductor: What the Dialog takeover means for Renesas' automotive customers

Through the Dialog Semiconductor takeover, Renesas shifts its focus away from automotive electronics. Developers of automotive electronics nevertheless benefit from the acquisition - through new opportunities. The Dialog acquisition primarily brings Renesas more thematic and geographical diversity. The company, which previously had its R&D focus on Japan and the Far East, now gains around 1800 additional developers with a focus primarily in Europe. And, of course, additional business opportunities especially in the application areas of IoT, infrastructure and industrial. In total, the chipmaker expects the acquisition to generate synergies worth $325 million. This will result in a shift in the company's revenue mix, explained Sailesh Chittipeddi, executive vice president and general manager of Renesas' IoT and Infrastructure business unit. The newly added application fields will reduce the automotive business' share of Renesas' total revenue from 41% today to 29% - but only arithmetically, because in total there will be rather more revenue from automotive customers simply because of the additional products and technologies available. Renesas completes €4.8bn acquisition of Dialog Semiconductor with management change Dialog's expertise in the fields of PMIC, CMIC (Configurable Mixed-Signal IC), WiFi, BLE, LED Drivers and Haptics will benefit Renesas' technologies in the areas of xEV, Body/Interior and ADAS. In this context, Renesas' Auto CEO Takeshi Kataoka presented a number of "Winning Combinations" - solutions where the expertise of the two companies could be translated into marketable products particularly quickly and advantageously (see figure). These are engineering-vetted designs and allow customers to take advantage of an elevated platform for their design ideas, accelerating their product development cycle and lowering their overall risk in bringing designs to market. Nine of them are targeting automotive markets. One new solution for In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) includes a combination of Dialog's PMIC and CMIC with Renesas' automotive R-Car SoCs, buck regulators and timing ICs. Another Winning Combination combines Dialog's LED backlight and haptic drivers with Renesas' PMIC for LCD to realize an automotive display system. Further solutions combining Renesas and Dialog offerings are underway, including a Wireless Battery Management Systems (BMS) with Dialog's Bluetooth LE IC and Renesas' battery management ICs and MCUs.
