Dyer Mazda Blog Getting a Better Understanding of Auto Safety Ratings

Two organizations offer safety ratings for vehicles in the United States. They are the NTSHA and the IIHS. Each organization uses its own rating system and tests to perform their independent assessment. The best performing vehicles will score well in both rating systems. The NTSHA rating system uses stars to designate the crashworthiness of a vehicle. It goes from one star to five stars, with more stars being better. The NTSHA puts each vehicle through three crash tests to test the front and both sides. They also use a formula to determine the vehicle's rollover risk. The IIHS provides their rating in four categories: Poor, Marginal, Acceptable, and Good. Good is the best rating. The IIHS puts each vehicle through five crash tests to determine the vehicle's rating.
