This acquisition of a UK tech firm is a little out of left field as, unusually, the buyer is Japanese. Dentsu Aegis Network - part of Tokyo-based international advertising and public relations company, Dentsu - has acquired London-based ecommerce platform developer eCommera. Terms were not disclosed.I first met eCommera's co-founder Andrew McGregor back in 2009 (see eCommera parades 'service as software as a service') not long after they had raised a further tranche of VC funding. At the time, eCommera was turning over about £4m though still in loss. Then early last year, eCommera raised a massive $41m in a Series C funding round led by Dawn Capital (see here), by which time eCommera was a £26m revenue business - though still in loss. Something must have happened in between as eCommera's revenues this year (to 31st March) were £17.6m.Anyway, eCommera will remain based in the UK, with current CEO Mark Fagan reporting in to Dentsu Aegis UK CEO, Tracy De Groose.eCommera was an interesting story - perhaps it will get even more interesting.
