It can show up big or small, loud or silent, occasional or chronic, and we all seem to share it these days: STRESS. Each of us has felt the impact of stress at some point in our lives. Stress can impact our sleep, our relationships, our work, and our bodies. Knowing how to slow down, stay in the present moment, and let go of stress is an important skill in today’s world. Aromatherapy can be an enjoyable and supportive complement to our stress-busting practices.
Experiencing the calming and uplifting aromas of essential oils in a diffuser or room spray is a great way to start the morning from a place of centeredness. Tree oils, such as Hinoki Wood, Black Spruce, or Balsam Fir, work well for this as they can remind us to stay rooted and grounded while elevating the spirit. As for the morning commute to work or school, spritzing a bit of Lavender or Rose Hydrosol in the car, or on the face and hair, can help transform a chaotic environment to one of positivity.
Another easy way slow down and remember to breathe deeply is to indulge in an aromatic body oil after the morning shower. Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang or Yuzu are well suited for this application as they help inspire a peaceful ambiance. Others might prefer to reconnect with the body and breath while applying a pre- or post-workout massage blend with oils such as Vetiver, Rose Geranium or Atlas Cedar.
At the end of a long day, a relaxing evening bath with Roman Chamomile or Frankincense is a great way to unwind. And if a foot bath with a little Lavender is all one has time and energy for, it can be just as effective in helping to let go. Since one person’s experience of a specific oil may differ from another’s, it is worth experimenting with different oils, combinations, and practices to find one’s unique place of peace, contemplation, or sweet surrender - however that may look or feel.
