🎙 You can listen to an AI-generated version of this blog post (created with Google NotebookLM). Last week, I had the opportunity to attend Ellucian Live in Orlando , where I was invited by the company to join the event. The extra sunshine was a welcome treat-especially after a long winter-and as always, it was fun to catch up with old friends, make new connections, and enjoy long conversations with fellow analysts over a few beverages. The event kicked off, as it often does, with a student showcase-this year featuring violinists, singers, and dancers from the University of Florida. A reminder, woven into the programming from the start, that the work we do in higher education technology ultimately centers on students. With more than 6,000 attendees from over 1,000 institutions and 32 countries (including 2,000 first-timers), the energy at Ellucian Live was high. And this year, a clear theme emerged: Ellucian is not just refining its core products-it's redefining the very idea of the Student Information System (SIS) . Ellucian's message is that AI is everywhere-but what matters most is how institutions apply it. The company argues that technology should amplify the expertise of educators and administrators, not replace it. "Ask any student what changed their life in college," a speaker said. "It's not software-it's a person." The centerpiece of this vision is Ellucian Student , a new, cloud-native SIS that integrates AI across the student lifecycle. It builds on the legacy of Banner and Colleague, but with a new focus: rather than being just a system about students, it's designed to be a system for students. Key innovations include: Importantly, most of these innovations are only available to institutions that have moved to the cloud. While Banner and Colleague are still supported, the real evolution is happening in the SaaS space-where institutions benefit from continuous updates, lower total cost of ownership, and easier interoperability with other systems. Currently, about 15% of Ellucian's 2,600 customers have made the cloud transition. Another 100 institutions are expected to move in 2025. The company is clearly signaling that cloud is not just a technical upgrade-it's a strategic foundation for what comes next. This shift also reframes the role of the SIS itself. It's no longer just a back-office database. In Ellucian's model, the SIS becomes a dynamic platform that supports everything from student planning to workforce readiness. Despite all the tech talk, the most consistent message from Ellucian was about people. The platform is packed with AI, but the company is careful to frame it as a tool-one that works best when guided by the experience and judgment of educators, advisors, and institutional leaders. One speaker summed it up well: "In a world where everyone has AI, expertise is what matters." The event also highlighted the importance of partnerships, both with institutions and among peers in the industry. Texas Southern University's collaboration with Ellucian was showcased as an example of how shared goals can accelerate innovation and student success. Ellucian Live 2025 painted a compelling picture of where higher ed tech is headed: smarter, more connected, and increasingly shaped by data and AI. But it also made the case that transformation only works when it's grounded in the realities of campus life and student needs. For institutions still relying on legacy SIS systems, the path forward may be complex-but the direction is clear. Reimagining the SIS means moving beyond a back-office database to embrace a strategic hub that drives student success. And that's a conversation worth continuing, preferably over another round of drinks with good company.
