Types Of Body Spray Body spray is a perfume product, not to be confused with Eau de Parfum, eau de toilette, or cologne. By definition, it is a scented spray for the body. It is used to deodorize and mask the body with a pleasant scent. Body sprays are alcohol-based or non-alcohol-based, usually water-based. There can also be glitter body spray, where glitter is suspended in the formula and will leave the spritzed areas shimmery. Scenting Body Spray and Strength Body spray can come in several strengths. A 1-5% fragrance load is ideal. On the left, we have a lightly scented body spray recipe with a 1% fragrance load. On the right, we have a strongly scented recipe. Test the fragrance at 5% in a small batch before making a whole gallon. Some fragrances will separate or cloud the base. Use our batch calculator to calculate how much fragrance you will need for 4 gallons of body spray base. It may seem like a lot to start off with. but at 4 gallons you get a great price break, and body spray goes quickly. This price example will yield 128 units of 4-ounce bottles, scented at 5%. You will need a pound and a half of fragrance/essential oil. Note* you can add colorant to body spray. However, it may stain white or light clothing. So we recommend using very minimal coloring or none at all. Alcohol-Free Body Spray Recipe And as the saying goes, water and oil don’t mix. So to add fragrance to the base, you will need a solubilizer. This ingredient allows you to add fragrance and oils to a water-based product. For this particular formula, we will be using Polysorbate 20 Solubilizer. To properly mix in the fragrance, mix the fragrance and poly 20 in a small container before adding it to the gallon. Shake until you see no streaks of oil in the gallon. Pricing your body spray Here we have the cost of a 4-ounce body spray scented at 5% (strong scent). This requires a pound and a half of fragrance. So add that into the pricing calculator under the other unit costs. To find out that cost, take the price of the fragrance oil for the whole batch: and then divide it by the possible units. In this case, it is 128 possible units. $60 divided by 128 units is 0.47 so add that to the existing .10 under the “other unit costs”. If you price this body spray at an affordable $13 for a 4-ounce, the retail price is 3.25 an ounce. The cost to make it is .68/oz. On average big box brands charge $14.78 for the same size ($3.69 per ounce). Using typical markup for retail (50%) estimates their cost per ounce at $1.84/oz. Marketing Your Body Spray Something for everyone: When it comes to fragrance, there is something for everyone. Knowing your niche and target audience is key. Do you want to make a concentrated body spray or a light mist? Will you be using essential oil or fragrance? Strong-scented body spray is popular with the majority of the population. Most people love spritzing on a scent when they want to freshen up. Used for special occasions or casual use, a strong body spray is preferred by most people. Big box brands use high percentages for longer-lasting fragrances. However, a growing group of people who are sensitive to fragrance. They find the typical fragrance load obnoxious and headache-inducing. A simple way to resolve that issue is to use a lighter fragrance. 1% is enough to be able to detect the scent, without being overpowering. And for those who are extra sensitive to the drying effects of alcohol. Or they can be sensitive to the actual smell. An easy way to cater to that crowd is to make a water-based body spray.
