EVA Friederichs Blog Skin and Aging

If you are lucky you will live a long peaceful life and age gracefully. But with that long life you can expect some major changes in what your skin will feel and look like. There is good news and bad news when talking about the skin and aging. We will start with the bad news, then move on to the good. As the skin ages it thins, even though the number of cells stays the same. Though, the number of cells remain unchanged the cells containing pigment decrease with time. These two changes create a thinner skinned, paler version of the youthful you. It also aids in revealing age spots and previous sun damage. The tissue that connects the skin decreases, giving a saggy less perky look. This loss of elasticity is especially vulnerable to sun damage and can result in a leathery, weather-beaten appearance. The fat under the top layer of skin also thins. That's why older people need to wear sweaters all the time and yes, I have a sweater on right now. The loss of fat makes wrinkles more and more visible as the fat decreases. The sun feels so good, especially when you are young. But the price you pay for unprotected sun activities is visible when you are older. Ultraviolet rays penetrate the top layer of skin and wreak havoc causing accelerated aging. It's premature aging delivered topically, especially of you are outside sunbathing. Had a long eventful night and went straight to bed wearing make-up? You might save time but you are smothering your skin when it needs you to care for it most. Wash your face every night so that it can heal, rejuvenate, and rest. Another way to age your skin is from the inside. Smoking, alcohol and eating unhealthy foods can not only impact your health but can speed up the aging process dramatically. Are you ready for the good news? I know I am. You can slow down the aging process. If you really want to improve the look and health of your skin you can find skin care that not only delivers younger looking skin but promotes healthy skin. A common misconception is that you can find great skin care anywhere. That simply isn't correct. You aren't going to find the best skin care over the counter at your local pharmacy or grocery store. Why? Because products that are meant to be on the shelf for long periods of time, for all skin types, for all ages, for all circumstances have very few active ingredients to cause real change in the skin. You may experience temporary results but will most likely be looking for something else to replace that product within a year. This is a big reason why skin care companies that make products for the general public come out with new products every year. What you need to slow the aging process are products with active ingredients for your skin type that promote healthy skin. Here are some basic things to look for based on your age.Under 30 and looking to maintain or enhance your youthful radiance? Look for products that:Protect your skin from the sunAdd hydrationContain antioxidantsDeeply cleanse the poresOver 30 year and are noticing the first signs of aging like fine lines, thinner skin, and sun damage? It's time to up the ante:Invest in a couple of serums that penetrate the skin deeplyUse a Vitamin C serum with chelated CUse products specific to your skin typeGet regular facialsOver 40 and have crow's feet, wrinkles, age spots, or other clearly visible signs of aged skin? Look for these products:Promote cell regenerationBuild collagen and elastinPromote circulationPenetrate the skinThe fact is your facial routine should get a little more complex as you age. You should go from a cleanser and moisturizer with SPF with the occasional exfoliation treatment (in your 20's) to a cleanser, multiple serums, more aggressive exfoliation, more hydrating creams and a regular visit to a skin care professional. You are naturally beautiful but that doesn't mean it is effortless to maintain or improve upon it. Treat yourself to lifelong beauty and invest in skin care practices that preserve your youth.Betty White is a perfect example of aging with grace (and humor). At 36 she was stunning and clearly looked younger. By the time she reached 53 she had visible lines near her eyes but still looked great for her age. At 90 she has much thinner skin, and heavier wrinkles than in her 50's but she doesn't look a day over 80. Two of Betty's secrets are never using bar soap to cleanse her face and getting regular facials. Your are beautiful. Keep it that way for as long as possible with smart choices in your skincare products and routine. Invest a little time and energy, and in products that focus on promoting healthy skin. Purchase products designed for your skin, your lifestyle, and your needs. We want you to enjoy growing older gracefully.
