Covered by 76 contracts, a total of 17 foreign hotel chains are operating 83 establishments in Cuba, of which 98% are four and five star categories. Of those chains, 11 are Spanish and represent 65 % of associates in this country, while managing 72% of the hotels operating under this system. At the head is Meliá, with 28 hotels in payroll administration and 13 thousand 480 rooms, followed by the Canadian firm Blue Diamond Hotels and Resorts, owned by the company Sunwing Travel Group, with 15 hotels and 8,472 rooms. The remaining operators come from France, Portugal, Jamaica and the United States. Starwood US signed a bilateral agreement with Cuba, first deal of its kind since 1959. The deal includes the Hotel Inglaterra, a Havana icon that will become part of Starwood's Luxury Collection and Hotel Quinta Avenida, which will become a Four Points by Sheraton hotel. Both will undergo renovations before opening under their new brands later this year. Starwood is planning to make structural as well as service changes including upgrading bathrooms, buying new air conditioning systems, upgrading fire safety systems, and adding creature comforts in renovated rooms.
