Great American Blog Reuters Health: Hormone Therapy, Calcium May Lower Fracture Risk

Hormone therapy, when combined with both calcium and vitamin D tablets in women after menopause, may lower the risk of hip fractures. Reuters Health recently reported on a study completed that showed the benefits of calcium and vitamin D tablets and supplements. According to Reuters Health, "We always tell women to take calcium and vitamin D," said Dr. Michele Curtis, a women's health researcher from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. "At the end of the day what this study really says is, what you thought was a good thing to do really is a good thing to do." The Reuters Health article "Hormone therapy, calcium may lower fracture risk" mentioned that hormone therapy itself is high risk, but that those already undergoing such treatments should add calcium and vitamin D supplements to their diet. This report is quite different from the recent U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommendations against the use of supplements of vitamin D and calcium.Jean Wactawski-Wende and her other colleagues from University at Buffalo compared seven years' of total fracture data for women in their 50s, 60s and 70s that participated in the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) study. Reuters Health offers and in-depth explanation of the study and its implications. To read the article in its entirety, use the link below:http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/06/28/us-hormone-therapy-idUSBRE95R0YN20130628
