Healing On The Danforth Blog Arthritis and joint mobility

When I get a twinge of arthritic pain in the fingers, I briefly wonder whether age is catching up with me. It's easy to get caught up in the health statistics that dictate an expectation of gradual decay. Then my better sense takes over because I know that, with a little care and attention, I can still function well. Age is just a meaningless number. As a massage therapist my hands are important for the work I do so I have to keep those in good condition. I believe that it is important to not just focus on the hands themselves but to think more holistically. Therefore, the use of contrast baths (alternating hot and cold water and always finishing with cold water) can be helpful but it's only a part of the solution. The list of possible ways to deal with arthritic pain are many - some you may find effective and others that seem not so helpful. These might include supplements such as Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Omega 3 oils, Turmeric or Curcumin, Capsaicin, and Bromelain. Others may find relief with NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatories) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol) but with these one should adopt caution because, as with everything, there are side effects. I'm starting to know my body and I can zero in on what works for me.....or, in this case, what caused the arthritic twinges in the first place. The Pecan Pie was a prime culprit although, I must confess, it was quite delicious. "Bless me Father for I have sinned." I acknowledge my weakness for sweet foods and usually will avoid having these in the house because I am easily tempted. The same with bread and cheese. I don't know how to limit myself to one slice. Because of the attendant pain with arthritis, the inclination might be to rest the joints and that is the worst thing you can do. Exercise, even if pushing through a modicum of pain, is highly desirable and I draw the analogy of a car: keep it moving to avoid it seizing up. I will be writing my next blog on foods that cause inflammation and specifically the research and writings of David Servan Schreiber MD who for years successfully battled a brain tumour.
