With greenhouse farms in Camarillo, Calif., Mona, Utah, and Delta, British Columbia, Houweling's Group featured paperboard top-seal punnets at its virtual booth at Produce Marketing Association's Fresh Summit 2020. The packaging uses 90% less plastic compared to traditional 1-pound clamshells. The company grows tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers at its farms, plus with partners across North America. Houweling's Group booth staff also discussed a partnership with Apeel Sciences for plastic-free English cucumbers. Every 500,000 cases of Apeel English cucumbers shipped eliminates the equivalent of 820,000 single-use plastic water bottles. It reduces greenhouse gas emissions that would be equal to planting 790 trees, according to Houweling's.
