The Macy's department store in Center City, Philadelphia, has closed after serving the community for nearly two decades. According to NBC Philadelphia , the storied location saw a special sendoff last Saturday with a parade of organists performing hourly recitals of the legendary Wanamaker Organ a day before yesterday's final closure. The decision to close is part of Macy's "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which aims to "return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth," a spokesperson for Macy's shared earlier this year, as per NBC Philadelphia . The strategy includes shuttering around 150 underperforming stores over three years while simultaneously investing in revamped Macy's locations through 2026. Families flocked to the storied building over the weekend for one last chance to experience the Wanamaker Organ. "It's more emotional than I thought, you know, it brings up those memories," one attendee said in an interview with FOX 29 . The closure not only ends a shopping era but says goodbye to a gathering spot cherished for its holiday lights show and as a venue for family traditions. Philadelphia's Historical Commission, however, ensures that the Wanamaker Organ and the "Meet Me at the Eagle" statue within the grand court - both historically protected - are to remain preserved. The future of the Wanamaker Building is yet to be determined, but city officials and the building's owner have pledged to keep the organ playing, even as the building awaits some form of transformation, as reported by FOX 29 .
