One homeowner's quirky sense of humor inspires a unique bathroom renovationUpdating a dynamic Berkeley couple's guest bathroom meant incorporating design elements that spoke to their playful personalities-a challenge easily accepted, and won, by Made interior designer Ariel Magidson.Take a look at this incredible transformation and read what Magidson had to say about the design process and working with the homeowners to achieve their renovation goals.A space that once lacked any personal style is now full of refinement and character.Extending the bathroom floor tiling into the shower is one of several design decisions that make this space appear much larger. What was the overall design process like?We designed this bathroom in a little less than two weeks from my first meeting with the clients. That included their approval of renderings which took about 10 minutes-easily one of my quickest projects to date. One of the many photorealistic 3D renderings, this one offers a bird's-eye view of the future space. That seems fast! Was it so smooth because they knew exactly what they wanted? No, not at all. They were completely open to ideas and a designer's opinion-he's a UX designer, after all! They were really trusting and listened to what I had to say. Even with basic parameters-including a clear budget-when designers mesh well with clients, there's a certain empathy that drives you to give them the result they ultimately want. What were their goals for the guest bathroom?Apart from a serious update to the space, our goal was to infuse a bit of the Berkeley vibe into the home. Previously the home belonged to one of their parents and they felt it was a bit too stark. They wanted to bring fun touches to the design that not only reflected their personalities, but the eclectic area they live in.Before the renovation the bathroom felt dark and cramped, and didn't reflect either homeowner's personality. How did you manage to achieve the result they were looking for? They wanted guests to have a moment of surprise when the door opened, so in addition to the decisions on various fixtures, tile, and other elements, I mentioned picking out a funky wallpaper. But the clients took it one step further and suggested that we put the wallpaper on the ceiling! Our eyes completely lit up at the idea, and we were immediately on the hunt for the perfect print. Ultimately, we landed on a bright Savuti pattern from the Cole & Son Ardmore Collection depicting lively African-inspired flora, fauna, and animal life.Cole & Son's playful Savuti pattern from its Ardmore Collection. It's definitely unexpected and quirky-this bathroom remodel sounds like a dream project. It was definitely a collaborative effort. The project was a real success because of the trust we formed early in the design process. The homeowners wanted to know their opinions were heard and, likewise, needed the input-and true emotional response-from a professional. Delivering this caliber of a renovation really exemplifies why clients love working with Made. In fact, we've just finished a second bathroom for them! Schedule your free design consultation
