Meijer: Medina Meijer set to open May 8

MEDINA - In just more than a month, Medina shoppers will have a new place to go as the Meijer supercenter sets its opening day for May 8. Meijer recently announced that it would open three new supercenters in Northeast Ohio, increasing its store count within Ohio to 58. Besides Medina, locations will also open in Austintown and Richmond Heights. This will be the second Meijer store in Medina County, as the first store opened in April 2022 in Brunswick at 3800 Center Road. Meijer built its new supercenter in the space that once housed Medina's former Super Kmart, 1105 N. Court St. Medina's Super Kmart opened in July 1991 and was the first Super Kmart to open in the country, closing permanently in 2012. After its closure, Kmart's lease remained in place for five years, but the building remained empty. The former Super Kmart, along with the Sears Auto Center, were both demolished in late 2024. In May 2023, the city of Medina received planning and zoning applications from Meijer regarding the 1105 N. Court St. property. That June, the applications were approved, allowing them to move forward. The 159,000-square-foot supercenter will include bakery, meat, seafood and deli departments, a garden center, a full-service pharmacy with a drive-thru, and a designated curbside pickup area. "We're investing heavily to serve the Northeast Ohio community and consistently receiving positive feedback about our value and convenience," said Todd Anderson, vice president of the Ohio region for Meijer. "Ohio was the first state we expanded to outside of Michigan and we look forward to continuing that growth this year and into the future."
