Like many of you, our hearts are broken by the images coming out of western NC. And, like you, we’re all too familiar with coastal North Carolina’s history; hurricanes aren’t exactly a rarity hereabouts. While you may know how to protect your home, what about your car? Mike Toler shares some tips to keep you and your car safer.
Prepare to Go
If there is an evacuation order in your area, heed it. In addition to having a bag ready to go with clothing and other essentials (like your important documents), your car has to be ready to go at a moment’s notice. This means having enough gas to get where you need to go. You may also need to clean it out beforehand so there is enough room for people and their belongings.
Be Proactive About Maintenance
An evacuation isn’t the time to find out you have car trouble. This is why you should always be proactive about maintenance. Change the oil, rotate the tires, and test the battery. Your car may save your life, so you must know it is in good health.
Keep It Covered
If a hurricane doesn’t warrant an evacuation, it can still cause considerable damage. If you have a garage, pull in as far as possible, secure the door, and board the windows. We also suggest covering your vehicle with a tarp for added protection. You can order one from our MOPAR® parts department, but even a tarp is better than nothing in a pinch.
