Our story begins in the dirt, with an MIT scientist and the equestrian who posed a question to him about why her horses rolled around on the ground. Little did they know that one question would end up sparking, and ultimately proving the hypothesis that this rich soil contained an Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria that is an essential part of the nitrogen cycle in nature and on our skin. Further research showed that this same bacteria has been stripped away from human skin from the harsh chemicals used in traditional skin and personal care products. So when we found a way to biohack that good bacteria back in, we knew we were onto something revolutionary.
It’s almost crazy to think that Mother Dirt was founded on the power of a single, invisible microorganism. But thanks to the MIT scientist who discovered it, and the power of one New York Times reporter’s experience that went viral back in 2014, it did. And our Ammonia-Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB for short) has been the cornerstone of our company ever since.
