Newport: Newport's only food pantry moving to new location after losing everything in flooding

NEWPORT, Tenn. (WATE) - Newport's only food bank has a new home after its previous location was destroyed in flooding brought by Helene . The Bread Basket is moving to a new facility located at 625 Honey Bee Lane in Newport. The nonprofit, which is a part of Central Charities of Newport and Cocke County, shared that the new location is larger and more accessible, allowing them to better serve the community. A grand reopening to celebrate the new location is planned for Thursday, October 31 at 10 a.m. East Tennesseans can make $25 per hour working storm recovery jobs Following the flooding, Trish Clapper, the pantry's director, told 6 News that they lost 100% of their products, shelving, freezers, and equipment. Her goal was to find a way to keep helping the community as soon as possible. "We are overjoyed to reopen in our new facility! This relocation not only symbolizes a fresh start for us, but also enhances our capacity to serve those who are hurting and need help from the devastation of the flooding. Our commitment to loving and supporting Cocke County remains as strong as ever," said Clapper. Officials debate how to best run clothing center for Knox County students Support from the community and collaborations with Mountain Ways allowed the nonprofit to rebuild and expand their services in the new location. "We are thrilled to help The Bread Basket be of service to those in dire need during this time of recovery and rebuilding. Our mission is to share and preserve Appalachian culture and heritage by giving back and loving our neighbor, and we believe this partnership embodies that commitment," said Lori Moore, Mountain Ways Executive Director.
