Post Date:2025.04.01 From:FENC Through the efforts of the R&D Center of Far Eastern New Century (FENC) led by Dr. Fanny Liao, a groundbreaking technology has been developed to transform rigid-waste PET bottles into soft and flexible shoe midsoles. The first commercial batch has been successfully supplied to SALOMON, a French modern sports lifestyle brand, for use in its iconic Solamphibian river tracing shoes. This global innovation marks another significant achievement of FENC in environmental protection, sustainability and recycling. By converting rigid-waste PET bottles into thermoplastic polyester elastomer (TPEE), FENC enables the manufacturing of high-performance footwear by using PET wastes. The key breakthrough of this project is the development of the first low-density, flexible recycled TPEE (rTPEE) shoe midsole made entirely from rigid waste PET bottles. The main technical challenge was to convert rigid PET into a soft and flexible TPEE foam material while maintaining sufficient melt strength to ensure durability, flexibility and comfort. The final rTPEE material can be directly integrated into the existing footwear manufacturing process with no new equipment or process modifications. This world-first technology which transforms waste PET bottles into shoe midsoles leverages FENC's expertise in PET chemical recycling and polymerization. FENC successfully developed copolymer elastomers from PET waste as a raw material, which were then used to produce flexible rTPEE shoe midsoles that meet all midsole specifications. This achievement not only demonstrates FENC's R&D capacities for commercialization and commitments to sustainable development, but also reinforces her global leadership in PET chemical recycling for new applications. Furthermore, this opens up new possibilities for sustainable manufacturing in shoe industries.
