Week 2: A Company FormsIn January of 2013, Walter began meeting with potential future employees to develop a plan. Weekly Startup calls were held off-business hours on Friday evenings to discuss forming a company and developing a product.Parsec Labs was chosen as a company name due to interest in Astronomy and Star Wars and Star Trek (Walter also has a Masters in Physics). A Parsec is a unit of length used to measure large distances to objects outside of our solar system. The most common pop culture reference is: "You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon? It's the ship that made the Kessel Run is less than twelve parsecs..." -Han Solo, Star Wars: A New Hope. This is actually an incorrect way to use this term since a parsec is a unit of distance - not a unit of time. However, when applied to Parsec Labs' Storage Management Platform, it makes perfect sense. The platform allows businesses to traverse any distance within their storage ecosystem - in the most efficient, intelligent way, from Flash to Cloud.®Our Parsec Labs logo was actually developed in a 99designs.com contest - truly a startup move (trying to save money where we could). The font fit with our "spacey" theme and could be done in black and white or full color. The color orange was really what made our logo and identity pop. Orange stands out in a data center. It's associated with enthusiasm, creativity, determination, and success. It's a fun color. It speaks to the innovation of our product.Above: The "Parsec orange" paint is Hirshfields "Cheddar Cheese"With logo and ideas in hand, Parsec Labs LLC was incorporated in April of 2013 and received first funding in May.
