When an aging parent begins to display behaviors that aren't typical of them, adult children often panic. "We know families see new and unusual behaviors in a loved one and jump to the conclusion that they have Alzheimer's disease," explains Tom Arnold, Agency Manager for Stay at Home Personal Care in Norfolk, Virginia. "Forgetfulness and confusion might make you assume the worst. These can indeed be some of the early warning signs of Alzheimer's disease or a related form of dementia. But they can also be caused by something else. There are several other reversible illnesses and conditions that mimic dementia. Before a physician concludes that your parent has Alzheimer's they will perform tests to rule out other potential illnesses."
