Providing care for a spouse is something most couples encounter at one point or another. It may be during a period of rehabilitation following an accident or surgery or long term if they live with a chronic illness. There are many advantages to having a spouse as your primary caregiver. That can include knowing your privacy will be protected, less embarrassment with personal care and being able to count on someone who knows you well. Many spouses find it personally rewarding to care for their loved one. There is, however, a downside to caring for a spouse. As needs increase, the caregiver job often becomes more than a full-time effort. It leads to caregiver stress and exhaustion. That can put the caregiver at risk for a health crisis of their own.
