Stay At Home Personal Care Blog Winters Impact on Virginia Seniors

Now that the calendar says another long cold winter is finally behind us, it's time to evaluate some of the health issues winter often creates for older adults. When the winter winds blow, many seniors stay indoors to avoid falling on the ice. That puts them at higher risk for a vitamin D deficiency because they have less exposure to sunlight. It also makes them more likely to lose muscle strength from months of a more inactive lifestyle. Those factors both make older adults more susceptible to falls and fractures. Estimates are that 1.5 million adults over the age of 50 will fracture a bone each year.
