Article content West End Theatre Project has outdone itself with a spectacular staging of the enduring musical Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. The Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice blockbuster hit is in the creatively capable hands of co-directors Jeannine Jefferson and Sandi Dal Cin, who propel this much-loved musical into a thing of pure joy. The 50-plus cast present showstopping number after showstopping number and must be thoroughly exhausted by show's end. They sing and dance with enthusiastic energy and vibrancy throughout, while reminding us of themes of overcoming adversity and finding your place in the world. The production has an easy flow that doesn't let up. The story is told completely through song and is enhanced by outstanding choreography and movement of people, as well as resplendent costuming and setting effects. The two-level set is put to good use under the sun-moon-stars surroundings and a family-friendly feel encompasses this show. Article content Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat - written in 1968 for a school choir performance - is loosely based on the biblical story from the Book of Genesis about Jacob and his 12 sons, of whom Joseph was his favourite. When Joseph is gifted with a colourful coat, his siblings become jealous and plot his demise. Leo Moore is superb in the title role, presenting a humble Joseph, full of compassion for others and a strong sense of purpose. He is gifted with an ability to interpret dreams. Moore comes across with charm on Any Dream Will Do and power and poignancy on Close Every Door to Me. Lauren Kinney is a force of nature in her role as narrator. She commands the stage as a storyteller and dazzles us with song and dance of wide-ranging styles. Her energy is boundless and her presence on stage leaves us starstruck. Article content Also leaving us starstruck is Joshua Wood in the hip-gyrating, lip-curling, pompadour-hair-styled role of Pharaoh - the Egyptian Elvis of his day. You can't help falling in love with this blue suede shoe-wearing Hound Dog who really gets the place rockin' and rollin' in fabulous fun. Didn't want to see him leave the building, thank you very much. The 11 brothers of Joseph are a talented bunch responsible for oh-so-many showstopping numbers that range from country and western hoedown style to ya-man calypso to 1970s go-go style to 1920s bouncy Charleston. These guys are crazy good and so hard working. The supporting ensemble players and teen and childrens' choruses are delightful, as are the accompanying orchestra members. Every song and dance routine are creatively conceived and executed to perfection. To mention a few - One More Angel in Heaven, Go Go Go Joseph, Song of the King, Those Canaan Days, Benjamin Calypso and Grovel Grovel. Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat runs March 27 to 30 in the Sault Community Theatre Centre. Go go go to see it.
