CES was founded in 1997 by the Battelle Memorial Institute (BMI) and Terra Vac as the first private company to commercialize Electrical Resistance Heating (ERH), a form of ISTR. BMI operates the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) for the Department of Energy (DOE). All research and development information and associated patents were transferred from BMI to the staff at CES.
