With updates and redesigns on the horizon across its lineup, the ever-practical automaker is quietly laying the groundwork for its next generation of crowd-pleasers. One of the most anticipated refreshes? The next generation Corolla , which is set to arrive in hatchback, sedan, and estate form. But that begs the obvious question: what about the Corolla Cross? More: Toyota's Baby Land Cruiser FJ Debut Pushed Back To 2026 This compact SUV that is positioned as a smaller, less rugged and, most importantly, cheaper alternative to the RAV4 is due for a makeover of its own. While Toyota hasn't shared any official details yet, all signs point to a significant refresh in the next few years. A Rendered Peek At What's To Come We haven't seen a prototype out in the wild yet, but digital artist Theophilus Chin (a.k.a. Theottle) is already trying to fill in the blanks. He sent over these speculative renderings that imagine the Corolla Cross wearing the brand's latest design cues, borrowing heavily from the Urban Cruiser EV , a smaller electric SUV that previewed some of Toyota's newer design language. The SUV adopts the brand's now-familiar hammerhead face, complete with slimmer LED headlights and a clean, grille-less front end. While that part feels on the mark, the side profile and rear are actually lifted from the Suzuki e-Vitara, a mechanical twin to the Toyota Urban Cruiser EV. In reality, the next Corolla Cross will probably go its own way, with more sculpted lines like the latest C-HR and C-HR+, though it'll likely keep a boxier rear for practicality's sake. Interior Tweaks And Tech Upgrades Inside, Toyota is likely to introduce a more digital, connected cockpit. Expect larger screens and a layout that mirrors the latest from the brand's lineup. At the same time, the Corolla Cross will likely keep its family-friendly roots, with a cabin focused on usability and comfort. An upgraded suite of advanced driver assistance systems is also expected, giving the SUV a stronger safety story to tell. Platform and Powertrain: Familiar, But Better Toyota tends to stick with what works, so the next Corolla Cross will probably continue to ride on the TNGA-C platform, with incremental improvements. Under the hood, things may get more interesting. The company is developing a new 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that could show up here in several flavors: turbocharged, hybrid , and plug-in hybrid. That would bring a welcome mix of better fuel economy and added performance, without reinventing the wheel. More: Toyota's New C-HR+ EV May Launch In The US Next Year The Corolla Cross was introduced in 2020 as a compact SUV bridging the gap between the smaller C-HR and the larger RAV4 in Toyota's lineup. The model is currently offered in various markets all over the world, featuring a slightly different design depending on the region. Mid-cycle updates have been trickling out across various markets in 2024 and 2025, depending on the region. In Japan, Toyota is set to launch the facelifted Corolla Cross this May. That timeline all but guarantees the current generation will stick around for at least a few more years before a full redesign rolls in. Assuming Toyota sticks to its usual product cadence, a new Corolla is expected in 2026, with the next Corolla Cross likely following in 2027. That timeline would mark a solid seven-year run for the current model, respectable by any standard in the compact car world.
