It's disheartening to hear the tragedies taking place every other day in schools; a place where we could safely leave our kids to the hands of their beloved teachers and caretakers.Unfortunately these very caretakers have turned hostile. It is not by intention that schools employ such masked individuals disguised as wolves in sheep's skin. The question thus arises, How do we unmask or expose these individuals? or How do we prevent them in the first place from being employed?The answer isn't very easy. But there are certainly few precautionary steps all schools and organization that employ such caretakers must follow. 1. Psychometric test - These tests are built with the aim to asses ones aptitude, their skills and personality type. Psychometric tests can detect aberrations and undesirable personality traits. Such test must be conducted for teaching as well as non-teaching staff. 2. Reference checks - This works as a testimony of sorts - A firsthand experience from people who have interacted with the individual you are about to hire. But they might not necessarily be foolproof. Most often than not, serial wrong doers provide false number or references. 3. Court record check - Court Record check dig up records of illegal activities that prospective employees might have indulged in, as well as of criminal or civil offences which have led to litigation. By carrying out court record checks at pre-employment stage, you put a 'No Entry' sign for the wrong type of personnel into your Company.4. Drug Test - This should be carried out for all persons hired. Anyone under the influence of illicit drugs is a potential threat to people & assets. There have been several instances of workers committing crimes under the influence of drugs.The responsibility of teachers, the school children, the support staff and overall well being of all individuals employed lies with the topmost authority of the school / organization.Be it a principal, a trustee or board members - each person in authority must apply the Golden rule to strive to make the work environment healthy and safe. After all, no one wants to be remembered as an organization with a tarnished name.
